Copyright registration in India, made simple

Copyright registration records your authorship of an original work — a book, article, song, painting, logo artwork, photograph, film or piece of software — in the official Register of Copyrights, giving you a dated, government-backed record that you created it. Adv. Bhawna Yadav and her team prepare and file your copyright application for a flat ₹3,500, with the filing completed in two to three days. The fee is agreed with you in writing before we start, and it is the whole fee — no hourly billing, and nothing added later.

Copyright exists automatically the moment you create an original work, but registration is what lets you prove it. A certificate from the Register of Copyrights is treated by courts as prima facie evidence of your ownership, which turns a your-word-against-theirs dispute into one you can actually win.

What copyright registration protects

Copyright is the right to control who copies, publishes, adapts, performs or commercialises your original work. It covers a broad range of creations:

  • Literary works — books, articles, blogs, scripts, manuals, and computer programmes, since software source and object code are protected as literary works.
  • Artistic works — paintings, drawings, logos and brand artwork, illustrations, photographs, maps and architectural designs.
  • Musical works — the musical composition itself, separate from any recording of it.
  • Sound recordings — the recorded track as a distinct right.
  • Cinematograph films — films, videos and audiovisual content.
  • Dramatic works — plays, choreography and screenplays.

The registration does not create your rights — your act of creation does. What it creates is a clean, official, dated entry you can point to when it matters. That is the whole value of registering, and it is why the moment to do it is *before* a dispute arises, not after.

A certificate is also a working asset, not just a shield. It makes licensing cleaner, because a buyer or platform can see on record that the rights are yours to grant. It strengthens your hand in a takedown or a cease-and-desist, because you are no longer merely asserting ownership — you are producing proof of it. And when you sell, raise investment or hand a project to a bigger partner, a registered work is one less thing anyone has to take on trust. In short, registration converts creative effort into a documented asset you can defend, license and build on.

Our flat fee: ₹3,500, all inclusive

We charge one flat professional fee of ₹3,500 to prepare and file your copyright application, and we agree it with you in writing before any work starts. That single fee covers the consultation, categorising your work correctly, preparing the application, recording authorship and ownership properly, filing it, tracking the mandatory waiting period, and delivering your certificate once it is issued.

Here is the part we want you to hear clearly: we do not upsell. Plenty of providers pad a simple filing with add-ons you did not ask for and do not need. We do the opposite. We quote one fee, we tell you honestly what your matter actually requires, and if your work only needs a straightforward single filing, that is exactly what we do — nothing more. We respect your time and our own effort, and a clean, correct filing is a better outcome for you than a padded invoice.

The registration *timeline* after filing depends on the Copyright Office rather than on us, and we are upfront about that. What we control — preparing your application correctly and filing it in two to three days — we do quickly and properly, and we keep you informed the whole way through.

Who copyright registration is for

If you have created something original and it has value — commercial, reputational or personal — registering it protects it. In practice, we file most often for the following.

Authors and writers

Books, e-books, scripts, courses, research and long-form content represent months or years of work. Registration gives you a dated record of authorship you can rely on if someone reproduces or passes off your writing as their own.

Artists, designers and photographers

Logos, illustrations, artwork and photographs are copied casually and constantly online. A registered artistic work gives you real standing to stop unauthorised use and to license your work on your own terms.

Musicians and composers

A composition and a sound recording are two separate rights, and both can be registered. If your music earns — through streaming, sync, performance or licensing — a clear record of ownership is what protects that income.

Startups, agencies and software makers

Code, apps, websites, product copy and marketing creative are core assets. Registration matters most when work was produced by a team or an outside contractor, because it lets you fix on record that the rights sit with your company, not with whoever typed the keys.

Businesses protecting brand artwork

The artwork in a logo can carry copyright in addition to any trademark in the brand name. Registering the artwork adds a second, independent layer of protection over your visual identity.

Copyright is not the same as a trademark

This is the confusion we clear up most often. Copyright protects an original creative work — the actual writing, artwork, music or code. A trademark protects a name or logo used as a badge that identifies your goods or services to customers. A stylised logo can qualify for both at once: copyright in the design as artwork, and a trademark in its use as your brand.

The practical guidance is simple. If you are protecting a *creation*, you want copyright. If you are protecting a *brand identity* — the name and mark customers recognise you by — you want a trademark, and often both. When your matter needs the brand side handled too, our trademark filing service covers it, and we will advise you on the right combination for what you actually own rather than selling you filings you do not need.

What you get with Adv. Bhawna Yadav and her team

You are working with a named advocate and her team from start to finish — not a queue and not an anonymous portal. Concretely, you get:

  • A real consultation to understand your work, identify the correct category, and confirm who actually owns the rights before anything is filed.
  • Your application prepared accurately, with the work described and classified correctly, so it does not stumble on an avoidable error.
  • Authorship and ownership recorded cleanly — the single most common weak point in do-it-quickly filings, and the one most likely to cause problems later.
  • Your diary number confirmed to you the moment the application is filed, so you have proof your filing is live.
  • The mandatory objection window tracked on your behalf, with any routine follow-up handled, so nothing lapses because someone forgot a date.
  • Your certificate delivered as soon as the Copyright Office issues it, along with a plain-English note of what it does and does not cover.

How working with us goes

We keep the process light on you and heavy on us. It runs in three plain stages.

First, we understand the work. In a short consultation we identify what you have created, which category it belongs in, and — importantly — who owns it. If the work was written or designed by an employee, a freelancer or an agency, we sort out the ownership position before filing, because a certificate is only as strong as the ownership behind it.

Second, we prepare and file. We draft your application, describe and classify the work correctly, record the author and owner properly, and file it within two to three days. You receive your diary number confirming the filing is in.

Third, we see it through. There is a mandatory waiting period after filing during which objections can be raised. We track it, respond to routine matters on your behalf, and keep you posted. When the Copyright Office issues your certificate, we deliver it to you.

Notice what we do *not* do: we do not walk you through official portals or hand you a list of steps to attempt yourself. You hand us the work; we handle the filing and give you the outcome — a registered work and a certificate you can rely on.

Available across India, and for NRIs and clients abroad

Copyright registration is a single national filing, so where you are based makes no difference to the fee or the process. We act for creators and businesses in every state at the same flat ₹3,500, and we work regularly with NRIs and clients abroad. We gather what we need from you remotely, handle the filing here in India, and deliver your certificate wherever you are.

If you are an author, artist, developer or founder outside India protecting a work that will be published, sold or used in the Indian market, registering here gives you an enforceable record in the jurisdiction where you are most likely to need it. Distance changes nothing about how we work with you — only the medium of the conversation.

Why choose us for copyright registration

  • A named advocate, not a form. You deal with Adv. Bhawna Yadav and her team throughout, and the work is done with judgment, not run through a template.
  • One flat fee, agreed in writing. ₹3,500, settled before we start, covering the whole filing. No hourly billing, and nothing appears later.
  • No upselling — ever. We tell you honestly what your matter needs. If a single straightforward filing is all it requires, that is all we do.
  • Ownership done right. We get the authorship and ownership chain clean, which is exactly where careless filings fail.
  • English or Hindi. We take instructions and explain everything in whichever you are comfortable with, so you always understand what you are registering.

If you are not yet sure whether registration is right for your work, or whether you need copyright, a trademark, or both, book a consultation and we will give you a straight answer before you spend anything.

The legal basis

Copyright in India is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957, read with the Copyright Rules, 2013. Copyright subsists automatically in original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, sound recordings and cinematograph films under Section 13 of the Act. Registration is provided for through the Register of Copyrights maintained under Sections 44 and 45, and the resulting entry is treated as prima facie evidence in court under Section 48 — the practical reason registration is worth doing.

For literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, copyright generally lasts for the lifetime of the author and sixty years thereafter, under Section 22 of the Act, so protecting a work now secures it for a very long time. We apply the Act to your specific work, register it correctly, and make sure the record reflects the true ownership — so the protection actually holds when you need to rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the flat ₹3,500 for copyright registration cover?

It is our single flat professional fee for the complete filing work — the consultation, categorising your work correctly, preparing the application, recording authorship and ownership properly, filing it, and tracking it through the mandatory waiting period until your certificate is issued. It is agreed with you in writing before we begin, with no hourly billing and nothing added afterwards.

How long does copyright registration take?

We prepare and file your application in two to three days. After that, the timeline sits with the Copyright Office: there is a mandatory 30-day window during which objections can be raised, and the certificate follows once the application is examined and cleared. We tell you honestly what to expect so you are never left guessing, and we hand you the certificate as soon as it is issued.

Do I even need to register — isn't my work already protected?

Copyright exists automatically the moment you create an original work, so registration is not compulsory. What registration adds is proof. The certificate from the Register of Copyrights is treated by courts as prima facie evidence that you own the work, which is what turns a your-word-against-theirs dispute into one you can actually enforce. That single advantage is why most serious creators register.

Can you register copyright for software or a website?

Yes. Software source code and object code are protected as literary works, so a computer programme, app or website codebase can be registered. We record the authorship and ownership correctly, which matters especially when the code was written by a team or a contractor, so the rights clearly sit with the right person or company.

What is the difference between copyright and trademark?

They protect different things. Copyright protects an original creative work — the actual writing, artwork, music or code. A trademark protects a name or logo used as a badge that identifies your goods or services in the market. A logo can qualify for both: copyright in the artwork, and a trademark in its use as a brand. If you need the brand protected too, see our trademark filing service, and we will advise on the right mix.

Who owns the copyright if someone else created the work for me?

It depends on how the work was made. Work created by an employee in the course of employment usually belongs to the employer, while work commissioned from a freelancer or agency may still belong to the creator unless the rights were properly assigned to you in writing. We check this before filing and record ownership accurately, so you are not left holding a certificate that names the wrong owner.

Can you register copyright for clients anywhere in India, and for NRIs or from abroad?

Yes. Copyright registration is a national filing, so we act for creators and businesses in every state at the same flat ₹3,500, and we work regularly with NRIs and clients abroad. Your location makes no difference to the fee or the process — we gather what we need from you remotely and handle the filing here in India.

Will you work with me in English or Hindi?

Whichever you prefer. We take your instructions and explain everything in clear English or in Hindi, and we make sure you understand what the application says about your work and your ownership before it goes in. You should never be signing off on a description of your own creation that you have not fully understood.

Bhawna Yadav is entitled to act for clients across the whole of India, so this service is available the same way everywhere — for businesses and individuals in any state.
